I blend teaching with empirical fieldwork illustrations of employing the oral history method and the practice of oral history. The goal is to help researchers understand how oral history as an ethnographic research method can inform their research, develop their own capacities as an oral historian and add meaning-making to their particular research projects.

Oral History Practice

There is nothing like getting out there in the field. Nothing wrong with Zoom interviewing those who are beyond this personal engagement, either! There is a lot to be said for letters, diaries and photo albums that add to the aural value of listening.

I help researchers decide on their own dos & donts, field interviewing approaches from oral historians' published experience and teach oral history conceptual and theoretical approaches.

Interpretation and Translation of Oral History

I enter into a dialogue with researchers on their work, discussing a dilemma facing many oral history researchers: How do I analyze my 'amazingly interesting oral history research'? This workshop seeks to draw out meaning-making, how interviewees made sense of their experiential reality, and how political events, social phenomena, man-made and natural disasters translated in the lives of those who lived through it.
